I spent a lot of time looking for exchanges in different regions but never had enough points so I combined them. Now I have 33 pts. So now I can't seem to find any of the places I want in the months I want. I read about other people getting them and I can't even find the hotels as exchanges. I was looking at Puerto Vallarta, pretty much anything that does not have mandatory AI but in particular Grand Mayan exchange in Nuevo in Jan 2019. Am I looking to far ahead

You may be looking too far ahead or you may be too late. Vidant does bulk deposits early so its hard to say if you haven't been tracking them. That far out even if they have done a bulk deposit I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do a second round although Jan-March doesn't see the large deposits that the off season gets.
There are two codes for The Grand Mayan Under code 7491 I see January 2019 in hotel and 1 BR units.

You really need to put in an ongoing search - the ongoing searches are filled first, and those units never appear online, so if you only look at the online availability you only see the LEFTOVERS.

You are not too early.
You are very likely to get a match via ongoing search. Do not think that the inventory you see is all there is. That is not the case. They can source inventory, and they get new deposits every day.
