Best deal ever - ( except for perhaps Vacationhopeful /Linda's info or maybe Bogey 21's - 9 in 15 yrs)

Our 30 year old son graduated from McGill University in Montreal
He decided to do his third year "abroad / on an exchange "

He was able to spend the year at Claremont - McKenna College (So. California / eastern LA County - rank #9 - $ 54 K currently)
He was paying the McGill ( out of province) $ rate which was about $6000 Cdn in 2010 and (as I remember) he had some funding from the McGill exchange program .
so I think it was about $ 4K . He did have to pay the regular Claremont- McKenna Room & Board .

AND - he would call us from the swimming pool lounges / in the sunshine , in Feb while studying !

< Sort of like getting an amazing timeshare trade >
say - Hawaii / WKORN 2 bedroom - for a Cape Cod studio / winter week.

******
McGill - 2018
Quebec resident - $ 2456
Canadian resident -$7632
International - $16,000 + ( depends on program & there is required health insurance (about $1200) as a non-resident student ).

Drinking age in Quebec is 18
Legal weed age (apparently) is 21

best McGill " campus urban legend " - the student who aced all the (pre-med) first year science courses* AND never went to class OR “left the residence”-once cold weather started in October . Just showed up for the midterms & final exams .

* about 12-15 years ago ,McGill bought a nearby hotel building (now New Rez Hall), and converted it to a residence . It is above an urban mall with 2 grocery stores , other retail & a SAQ (Quebec liquor store ).
First year science classes with large enrollments are available via online video / probably started around 2005 .

It could even be true .

My cousin has been employed for years at the Williamson (Trade) School in Southeast PA (Media, PA maybe).

It was founded as a trade school and is STILL FREE for the multiple year (required) residential ONLY programs. My cousin always had 'issues' behavior problems. I, as a young teenager, spent a summer living with this non-verbal 4yo boy after his mother had health issues. He learned to listen to me as I had 3 younger siblings. He was an ONLY child at that time.

As staff members are also HOUSE parents, he might be very well suited to work with the kids of today. His wife and daughters live on the campus.

Nice! Our HS senior DD just got a fantastic deal as well. Three weeks ago she committed to play softball for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ, and received a 4-year full ride scholarship! She will be going into engineering. We are very proud of her accomplishments, both academically and athletically, and being that this is a $48K/year school, we are doing the happy dance!!:banana:

Grrr I truly dislike when I click on a link and get a pop-up blocking the content that tells me to turn off my pop-up blocker! Why do they think I use a pop-up blocker anyway! Like I care what the most expensive college for anyone else is, anyway! I got out of school without debt, and wish that were true for most kids today- but it isn't. No reason to glorify those schools that perpetuate the myth that a good education HAS to be expensive! I'd rather see a similar article showing the best CHEAP school in each state!

Jim
All three of my kids attended state universities and all three graduated debt-free (Bank of Mom & Dad). One lived at home (by choice) which was a nice offset because the tuition at a University of California school is quite a bit more than the state universities in CA. Two the three have a master's degrees and they didn't pay for those either (scholarships). All are gainfully employed. It can be done.

As someone who went to a small private university, the one area where you get a nice perk is in the networking. Now I didn't find this to be a perk for me because my school is pretty small and has only been around since the 1950's, but my friends/business associates who graduated from brand-name private schools have an impressive alumni network that will open a lot of doors. Once you get through the door you have to be able to pull your weight, but sometimes getting in is the hard part.

sort of like nepotism - but the 4 year upfront cost is higher.

Kurt ... I am somewhat aware of the Embry Riddle school in Daytona Beach, FL in Volusia County. Just down State Highway 17/92 was my small Florida University. Embry Riddle was WAY closer to the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent to the now (almost?) DEAD Daytona Beach International Airport ... which was the BIG regional airport before McCoy Air Force base was converted to non-military flights (commercial carriers).

I bet AZ has fewer hurricanes, less rain and no jungle growth. BUT both schools would be surrounded by Snowbirds during the Nov-Apr months and cheap housing from Jun-Oct.

My brother is living and working in Southern AZ by the Rio Grande River. He is a practicing and licensed AZ criminal defense pubiic defender (lawyer).

My bff's older daughter graduated from Embry Riddle. She is now Senior Safety Engineer at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. At times her voice has been the last you hear before lift off.
