My personal take on this is that it makes no (dollars and) sense to buy a vehicle with range (double, triple, more?) than one's daily use. The vehicles in the referenced article are all north of $50K and from makers whose Federal tax incentive has expired (after selling 200,000 units)- effectively making them $7500 more expensive. So if one wants to get on the EV bandwagon, aither buy a vehicle with the range you need (plus a cushion for unexpected additional) and then plan to rent a car for the one or two longer trips you take a year. You save on the initial cost, and save on the wear and tear on your daily driver. An added bonus can be had by buying one of a manufacturer's first 200K units. Ford and VW and Volvo are makers that will be coming out with new models that will qualify in 2020.

To qualify for the full amount available, you must have a federal tax liability in the year you purchase the vehicle that meets or exceeds the incentive amount. If the EV has a $7,500 tax credit available, and you only have a tax liability of $2,500, you can only take a $2,500 vehicle tax credit. Excess credits cannot be carried from year to year. The incentive is a one-time offer. You can only claim the tax credit the year you purchase the EV.

This is correct. And after the manufacturer has sold 200,000 units, the amount of tax credit tapers off to eventually zero. Several makers have zero'd off, notably Tesla. Before signing on the dotted line, check with your accountant AND the selling dealer to find out your exact tax benefit, if any.

That article doesn't even mention the newest electric car company getting ready for production: Lucid Motors.

The tax incentive on the Bolt EV just dropped to $1875.00 on Oct. 01 and will disappear next year. Tesla reached 200,000 units before the Bolt EV.

Not a very well researched article.

I'm a pickup guy, so am waiting for the Ford F-150 EV. Then I'll have a decision to make.

I'm waiting for a Ford F-350 EV, myself. Not sure an F-150 would do it....
