My mother just signed on to Trading Places International to allow her to exchange her 2 weeks in Cape Cod. Has any one had any experience with this company? They also offer a resorts to ports program which appears to allow someone that has deposited weeks to exchange for a cruise. Has anyone had any experiences with this program. Any help would be appreciated, it as been 15+ years since we have tried to exchange.

My experience is pretty good with Hawaii and a few western resorts. As with any of them, you have to be proactive in searching their inventory as well as waiting on the OGS.

Our first resorts to ports with TPI was terrific. Jonathan, the TPI travel agent, was great. Our second didn't go nearly as well. We booked on the cruise ship listing TPI as the travel agency, got home, and learned resorts to ports were now being handled by Interval International. We had to transfer the listing to II and deal with average customer service. We won't use resorts to ports again.

What type of cruise did you take? What did you get for trading your week?

The first cruise was Boston to Bermuda for one week. We got a $400 credit for each cruise, so that is less than the maintenance fee. Second cruise was New England ports for one week, Boston to several ports including Canadian stops.

If you are not a member of II or RCI, then paying the extra fee for Resorts to Ports may be worth it to you. But if you belong to either II or RCI, just use whatever cruise exchange service they offer.

What one gets for a 'cruise exchange' is a discount from the rack rate on 'selected' cruises. It will amount to far less than your annual fees. You are better off to just use a cruise agency like Cruises.com, Crucon, Vacationstogo and pay the discounted price for the perks.

Use Timeshare points and weeks for timeshare stays and cash for other travel.
