ABC News reported this evening that a woman on a flight from Dallas refused to give up her seat, until the airline offered her $10,000. They said there was a broken seat on the flight and they needed her to give hers up. She held her ground, and the airline stepped up. Wow!

To me a $10,000 voucher would be worthless. I just don't ever intend to fly that much. I'd much rather have a small amount of cash.

$10,000 would help with a long trip to Europe.

I would have taken $10K in airline voucher, unless I have an emergency to get home to. 10K will barely cover 2 business class tickets when we travel internationally, which we do once or twice a year.

Great for you.

But on almost any flight there will be people who do fly enough to make that voucher worth money. Offer me $1000 cash or $1000 voucher, and I'll take the cash. Offer me $1000 cash or $1200 voucher, and I'll take the voucher (provided the voucher is on an airline which I can use.)

As I've stated, my belief during an involuntary bump situation, the airline should essentially conduct an auction to find needed volunteers, Then can start low, but keep increasing to the point that htey get a willing volunteer. In the situation at hand, I cannot imagine they would not have found a volunteer somewhere before they got to $10,000.

And the bump should never be based on the lowest priced ticket - the contract for carriage is equally valid no matter the fare class.

The person HOLDING the lowest price ticket should have been insulted to be told, "GET OFF!" Some of the lowest price tickets are the ones SOLD far off from the travel date. Held for months. Plans made around THAT arrival (cars, hotels, tours, cruises, dinner, family events). I would be love to have gotten $10,000 in currency/cash .. not in travel vouchers on the airline that told me, "you are the cheapest to THROW off the plane.. the least VALUED customer ... the one who DOES NOT matter to US".

But $10,000 bribe/payoff is far better than "here is your $75 bargain price ticket refund .. sorry you missed your cruise or your mother's burial".

Yes, I have taken a few voluntary Southwest airline offers. Even stayed with the flight crews when bumps include a hotel night and transportation to the hotel. Plus a food voucher.

So much for reliving my adventure trips as the co-pilot's GF ... riding the circuit of Ransom Airlines.

Linda, maybe it's just how I'm reading them, but your posts sound really cranky today. Not sure if that's intended, but you sound very angry. Hope it's just how the words are coming across. If I'm just reading them wrong, sorry. Perception is everything. Hope you're okay. :)

I think this is Linda's usual style of writing. She knows how to be dramatic. ;)
