We have friends who were given a timeshare by an elderly aunt and are not sure they want it. They are not really into timesharing. I explained how hard it is to sell so they asked if we wanted it. It is an PCI Points resort already converted, 30,000 pts per year with MF's of $300. Am I right that this would not be a bad buy? I have no idea what to offer them but I don't feel right just taking it. Any ideas? Thanks.

An MF of 1 cent per RCI point is usually considered the maximum one should pay, and it seems like you are right at that, so the annual fee for the number of Points is not terrible, but not great. Of course, if you own resorts that can be used in Points-for-deposit, the annual fee per point may not matter much.

I have a thread on the Points board where I explain that RCI will not let weeks converted to Points be traded in RCI Weeks, and that my resort management (VRI) will not let me use my converted week in II, either. So, you should probably assume that you will only be able to use this week yourself or use it in Points, or maybe in an independent exchange company.

On another thread, BocaBum said he sees Points resorts on eBay going for about 5 cents a point.

What resort is this? Some Points resorts have a Home Group reservation priority, which should add some value.

There are a number of threads on the Points board which discuss what constitutes a good annual fee/RCI Point ratio, and how much it costs to buy at a RCI Points resort. You could look there for more details on pricing.

We already have a points account and also own weeks so this would just be extra points for us. I thought it might not be bad with RCI now charging for points for deposit. We would also avoid some of the fees by buying directly from them.

With a MF of 1 cent a point, you'd get good buys on some exchanges (the 9,000 points instant exchanges, studio units, off-season units) but it could be expensive for other exchanges (GC units, Hawaii, etc.) You might want to check the current chart that says how many Points is takes to reserve a week in various parts of the world. (I believe there is a "sticky" thread with this on the Points board.)

Yes I realize this as we've been in points since the very beginning. This would give us an extra 30,000 pts for pretty reasonable MF. Anyway they have decided to think about it for awhile. The resort is Grand Destinations in Mesquite NV where we already have a week and that's why they contacted us in the first place. We have owned here since 1997 and the MF have not increased at all even though all the units have been refurbished. I believe because they share the pools and other facilities with the Oasis Resort and casino this could be why. I checked the e-bay post that Ann suggested and the only one I saw with MF's that low was the Grandview, $295 for 30,500 pts. I think this is right? Just when I thought I had this whole points thing figured out I have another question. We did not convert our week to points at Grand Destinations because we already had paid to convert 3 weeks at Meadow Lake and we had always received great excanges from this resort including Lawrence Welk Vacation Villas and Port O' Call on Hilton Head Island. If we did get a chance to purchase this week would we be able to leave our other week on the weeks side, use it on the points side or would we still have to pay a conversion fee for that option?

I don't think that a resort could force you to convert all of your weeks there to Points just because you converted one of your weeks there to Points. Actually, I'm considering buying a week to use in RCI Weeks at a resort where I already own two converted weeks, and it never occured to me that there might be a problem using the new week in Weeks.

I'm now thinking it is probably up to the resort. For now I like keeping this other week on the weeks side while I can still get good exchanges. Don't know how long this will last the way new resorts are opening in Las Vegas. I may be able to get more points for $300 MF's but with the initial costs to purchase and the closing fees I'm not sure if I want to do that. Also I don't need higher MF's to get more points as 30,000 more would probably work for us and it is a resort that we wouldn't mind staying at once a year.
