What You're Entitled To If Your Flight Gets Cancelled
By Emily Price/ Air Travel/ Lifehacker/ lifehacker.com

"A canceled flight almost always means taking a later one, which can lead to missing your connection, shortening your vacation, and sometimes even missing the event you were taking the flight to attend in the first place.

A lot of times, flights are canceled due to things like the weather, which is outside an airline’s control. In those cases, you’re pretty much SOL and have to accept what, if anything, the airline offers you. In most cases, that’s simply rebooking you on another flight.

However, when the cancelation is the airline’s fault, you’re often entitled to a bit more. Here’s what you can expect from each U.S. airline, thanks to the folks at Flyertalk....."

Another reason I'm impressed with Southwest. Our connecting flight to Newark, NJ from Phoenix was delayed 6 hours (mechanical). They automatically gave every person a $200 travel voucher.

A number of years ago, we were stuck on the tarmac at Midway for about 3 or 4 hours due to thunderstorms and a tornado. Again, got $200 voucher in the mail.

Airline did best it could on the plane with lots of water and a/c and useable bathrooms.

We had a bad experience this year flying Hawaiian LAX-KOA. Direct flight cancelled, only option given was connect through OGG with a 5 hr layover. No compensation and I lost a FC upgrade I bid that was accepted and charged, had to jump through hoops to get the refund.

Completely soured us on this airline, we noticed their service is much more limited now. We used to enjoy the video shows of Hawaii activities, there was nothing showing only the personal video players. The crew had very few native Hawaiians.

I fly every month on Southwest for business, and due to delays, I have A LOT of vouchers, in addition to around 40000 miles. I flew Delta a couple times, delays got me $0 and wasting $60 per way on baggage fees.
