We will be on Oahu staying at the Wyndham Beach Walk the first week of Sept. We have one night open for a nice dinner on Waikiki. Normally we would just go to Dukes but we have been there a number of times and we will be staying right next door for a week at the Kauai Marriott the following week.

I am looking for suggestions for a nice restaurant. I did look at Roy's which is right around the corner from where we are staying but wanted to get other thoughts. Criteria would be for cuisine first then atmosphere and price. I am a steak and potatoes type but my wife enjoys seafood.

Thanks

What type of food do you like?

My favorite restaurant in Waikiki is Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin which is around the corner from the Wyndham Waikiki. Best Tonkatsu in America if you like such food.

Yelp reviews for Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin

Hy's Steakhouse is very popular, but in my view overrated. Nice atmosphere, though. Very pricey.

Otherwise, I just go to The Yard House which is across the street from the Wyndham.

Roy's is a good choice with excellent food at a fair price. They offer a prefix dinner special which is a good deal; you might check into that.

There are restaurants with better atmosphere and views but you'll pay for it.

PS: Another interesting place for lunch or an informal dinner is the Yard House restaurant; 130 beers on tap and good food. Also located in the Waikiki Beach Walk area.

+1 on the view from the Hula Grill. These four pictures were taken there. (The fourth one is creme brule in a pineapple.) Time your dinner so that you'll be there as the sun sets. Breathtaking beauty!

For the best food on the island (and about the best I've had ANYWHERE), try Alan Wongs. It's a mile or two away, in a more commercial area, with no view, but the food and service are both phenomenal. It's not cheap, but well worth it to us.

Aloha

Chai's Island Bistro at the Aloha Tower is always one of our favorites - and there is entertainment - always good - ranges from Danny Couch to Brothers Cazimero - always great - changes nightly. And the food is great!

See their website: chaisislandbistro.com

Have a great trip ... :)

My wife loves Alan Wong's. I went there once and didn't like it that much. They are really big on presentation of food. I prefer Roy's.

My favorite restaurant on the island is Maile's Thai Bistro in Hawaii Kai right next to Costco. And, the prices are really good for the quality of the food. I go there 2-4 times per month and bring all my visiting friends to this restaurant. If you go there, gotta have the Thai Crepe dessert.

I am here now at the Wyndham Waikiki.

I second Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin...awesome tonkatsu. My favorite place is Hiroshi's, across the street from duty free. Best yakiniku you will ever find in the states period.

I'll have to try it out. I usually go to Gyu kaku on Kapiolani Blvd mainly because my friends like it and it's cheap. I'll try out Hiroshi's when I am back on Oahu next month.

Do go. It's next to the foreign exchange and Sam's bento takeout shack. I suggest making reservations.

Roy's is really good and near Wyndham Beach Walkfor and for steaks so is Ruth's Chris. Chai Bistro is at the Aloha tower and we enjoy dinner there when the Bros. Cazamiro are playing. Infact the best dinner we had when we were there in April was at the Chai Bistro. I think we had a discount coupon from one of those give away booklets.

I enjoy eating at Roy's, and we've never had a bad meal there.
We love The Yard House, especially Happy Hour, and they have the best clam chowder.
The Hula Grill is also great, and as you can see, the view is amazing.

I am leaning towards Roy's or Alan Wong's but I am still open for suggestions.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Either one is a good choice; Alan Wong's might be a little nicer atmosphere wise but more expensive.

My wife and I went to Hiroshi's last night for dinner. I'd have to agree with your rating on this restaurant. It was outstanding.

We got the Platinum set. The Aussie Wagyu steak was about the best I've ever had.

Decor was nice. Didn't care for the graffiti in the stair well. But, the black and grey decor was nice and clean. Great service.

The veggies were pretty average. But, the meat was to die for. Highly recommended even though it is quite pricey. It was $175 for 2 of us including tip.

Try the Shorebird for a drink

Our first ever trip to Hawaii was a package that included staying at the Outrigger Reef (can't remember official name but same building Shorebird is located in).

I will never forget the feeling we had when going downstairs to the Shorebird and having a drink at sunset. Nothing fancy about the place but for us always a lot of sentimental value.

After being in Waikiki several times since then we still enjoy a drink there while watching a sunset and listening to music. I am sure there are many better places for dinner but it is really close to the Beach Walk and worth checking out.
