Why bother with web or kiosk check in?

We did our usual web check in for our Alaska flight to Mazatlan last November. When we arrived at the airport (YVR) there was no separate line, everyone checked in at the counter. We won't bother again but I was wondering if any other airports have stopped this or is it just Alaska?

Thanks
Diane

I guess one advantage could be if you wanted to change your seats, you'd have a better shot doing it 24-hours early as opposed to waiting until you get to the counter.

When ever we have used "web check-in" there have always been seperate lines for those who have their boarding passes and those who don't. But we are talking SeaTac where Alaska Air is huge!

PS we try to "carry-on only". So with our boarding passes, we go right to the gate and never get in any line.

check In

I am not sure I understand the OP. If you are checked in, then there is no need to stand in line- unless you are checking bags. I don't believe that was ever mentioned. Also you are traveling internationally and so the passport has to be checked. If everyone avoided the kiosk the line would be much longer. I also believe AS is still giving you mileage plan miles for OLCI- so you got that. Of course, the answer is become an MVP Gold because there you are given a special line.

In NZ at the major airports we have a special drop off counter for bags for passengers who have alreay checked in. Much faster and more convenient

Yes the point I was making is that at YVR they only had one line and that was for everyone. Many passengers were complaining because Alaska still promotes web checkin and has ample checkin kiosks but no separate line. We inquired because in the past we have zoomed through, having only to check bags and passport.

As far as changing seats, we can always do that online too.

I was just wondering if any other Alaska check in counter at other airports had stopped the practise. Obviously not at Seatac according to Bill.

Thanks everyone
Diane

I hate to admit it but we are almost always running late to the airport. Checking in on the web or via our IPhones keeps us from getting bumped.

One time, however, the self check in line was way way longer than the regular line. But that wasn't appearant until after we had already gotten our boarding passes. Lucky for us we were able to use the 1st class line because of our gold status.

Check In

You are probably not going to like my answer, but the truth is not all airports have express lines. Unless you have MVP or MVP Gold status, I don't know why you would expect it. You are traveling internationally Canada to Mexico and it is not unusal to require a face to face check in so that the employee can view the picture and enter the passport number. Some airlines have kiosks where this can be done but that would be the exception and not the rule. Alaska does have an express line in Chicago and as an MVP Gold I can use first class check in anywhere they have a class differentiated check in or I can do cubside check in and avoid the check in counter altogether. I think, rather than reflecting upon the inconvenience of standing in line, reflect on what happens if you had to stand in line without first being checked in. You needed to be there at least 2 hours in advance for an international flight and it is suggested 3 hours in advance. If you were there on time, standing in line just helped to pass the time. If you weren't there on time, at least you had the satisfaction of knowing that you were still checked in. Many airlines (United for one) closes off check in up to an hour in advance. Imagine standing in that line knowing you couldn't get to the front before the 1 hour is up and still not being checked in. Again, some airlines would cancel your ticket and sell if off to someone else. Sure it would be great if you were flying out of Hong Kong where you can check your bags and check in even before you get to the airport, but, of course, you aren't there. If you are flying out of Bozeman, MT you are standing in line because they only have one check in counter- forget the one line- I mean just one check-in station with one employee checking in everyone. Having had to stand in line many times before I became an elite, I really don't feel much empathy for you. If you don't like web check in, don't do it next time and see how you like the result. As i mentioned before you also probably got extra miles for the web check in. As an elite on Alaska and United, I'll tell you what irritates me- that is when I am standing in the elite check in or security line and the TSA diverts people without status into my line causing a bit of a delay, just so they can get those without status through the line. Nothing will slow down a line faster than the infrequent traveler.

Thanks for the explanation. My question originated because in the past several trips prior to this one in November, flying to Mexico on Alaska Air was a breeze. There was a separate line for webcheckin and kiosk check in passengers and even though we still came 'face to face' with an agent, our paper confirming we had already done a check in via our home computer, enabled us to get through much faster.

I don't understand if the airlines, specifically Alaska, still promotes web checkins and its not faster or more convenient, then why bother?

One final thought

I don't know if Alaska at YVR has changed it's check in or not. I do know if you go on flyertalk and look under miles at the Alaska section and ask the question, someone on there will give you the exact answer.

We have web check in for some international flights out of NZ. THe benefit of this is that you get your seat allocated and boarding pass at home and as such early check in is not so important to get the better seats.
For security reasons a face to face with a booking clerk is still required to confirm you are who you say you are. The larger airports with many check in counters have special web checkin counters.

You asked about other airports, Diane. In Kelowna we don't have a separate line for passengers that checked in on line, and I still check in on line. Alaska promotes web checkin as that is for all airports. If YVR had a separate line before, why don't you call Alaska and ask them if and why that was changed.

Wow, this is another great incentive for carry-ons only.

We take carry-ons only, so we go directly to security - love it!

Two awesome reasons now! No checked bag fees and going directly to security!

I haven't flown since all the airlines started charging for the first checked bag. How has that affected the overhead bins? Does everyone still manage to find space? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the bins get full, then the flight attendants "gate check" the bags (no charges). This happened to my wife and me on a recent trip. You just have to make sure there is nothing in your luggage that you will need to get later.

The next step is airlines will start enforcing the carry-on size limits. Some people carry on pieces of luggage that greatly exceed the limit.

Every airline has a limit to the size and number of carry-ons, but some airline enforce it, and some don't.

I travel that way all the time and I have 2 kids. We never find it hard to put our bags overhead. And I'm travelling at busy school holiday times.
