I'm hoping to start my search for a trip to D.C. Which timeshares are best for a week here?

Thanks

Dc timeshares--not much

only Wyndham has a timeshare near DC--it's in Alexandria on the metro line. All others are a substantial distance. The next closest is Presidential Resort in Chancellorsville, after that some in the SKyline area. People do live near Presidential and commute to DC for work--it is about 1-1.5 hours. There is a commuter train. Williamsburg is 3 hours away, Massanutten is about 2.5- 3 hours away. There is supposed to by a timeshare near Washington Harbor--only boat service, no metro. I don't know if it is open yet. It is about 25 minutes by car to DC.

As already mentioned Wyndham Alexandria would be the best location. But, it's generally very hard to get.

Someone posted they stayed at Wyndham National Harbor lately, so it must be open. I believe a city bus runs there, plus you could drive to one of the metro stations. Not as good as Alexandria, but certainly the second best.

I believe the references were to people staying at a hotel at National Harbor.

DC trips

I am from the DC area and if you can't get into the Alexandria Wyndham and are exploring other accomodations, try the Springfield, VA area. There are many hotels there, not as expensive as the ones in DC and there is a metro station there for trips into DC and you can usually park a rental car for free. Metro is the best way to see DC as parking is a premium there. If you don't travel during rush hour, metro will sell a day pass for around $5-6 per person and will give you unlimited use of the metro for the day. All of the museums are within a few blocks of a metro station.

There is a Metrobus express bus that goes from National Harbor to the Branch Ave. Metrorail station on the Green Line. From there you would hop on the metro to go to DC. The bus runs every 1/2 hour and takes about 20 minutes to get to Branch Ave. From Branch Ave. to Gallery Place or the Archives in DC would take an additional 1/2 hour and the train runs about every 10 to 15 minutes. In total the commute would be about a hour to a 1.5 hours depending on traffic and how long you wait for the train/bus.

Just as a forewarning, Branch Ave. is not a good neighborhood and the Green line goes through some of the worst and crime ridden neighborhoods in DC. Because of this and the upscale nature of National Harbor, hotel guests rarely use this route. It's really set up for employees to come to work.

Gaylord National (and I think other hotel guests can use this service) offers a shuttle to Old Town Alexandria, National Airport, and a few locations in DC. I think the rates are $5 (to Old Town) to $13 (to DC, airport) each way. I'm not sure about the timing, but odds are this is the route any National Harbor guest will take to get to DC, unless they drive.

Parking at Metrorail stations are difficult to find on weekdays and they are only offered at certain stops. It's probably easier just to drive into DC or take the shuttle, than do the park & train method. DC has plenty of parking spots available, as all office buildings are required to have a certain amount of spots though they are rarely used because so many workers take public transportation into DC. I've seen daily rates from $8 to $25. My office charges $12 per day, but it isn't in a central location. The roads (and signage) into DC are purposefully confusing to discourage Marylanders from cutting through DC, so you really need to use a GPS or map your way carefully to where you want to go. But once you find any commercial office buildings, you'll find plenty of parking options.

My mother in law is receiving a Gold Medal for her service as a WASP in WW2.

Thanks for any info!

congrats--lost of hotels, not many TS

there are a lot of hotels that have decent deals--for ex., near Dulles airport on the weekends, lots of suite-ype hotels, many with free shuttle to metro--although on the weekends, driving into DC is really no big deal. Also, some Tyson Corners hotels can give good deals, as well as National Airport (DCA) on the weekends, which is only 7 minutes by metro to DC. Don't limit yourself to DC, there are many suburban areas that are fine and an easy metro ride. For TS, only Wyndham in Alex and something at National Harbor. Congrats. Elaine

Wyndham's National Harbor should have rooms

I just stayed there and they have a lot of rooms to fill. It's fairly convenient to DC and directly across the river from Alexandria. If you are going to figure on using the public transportation then I'd try to get Wyndham's Old Town Alexandria. If you don't mind driving and you aren't intimidated by big city driving conditions then National Harbor might have more opportunities. I absolutely would not consider the public transit option that they give you at National Harbor.

Luckily, it's an easy drive into DC on I-295. On Tuesday it only took me about 15 minutes to drive from the hotel and find a parking space there by Air and Space. That was at 9am and I could see all the other roads gridlocked but I-295N and I-395N flowed great.

BTW, I've always stayed in hotels in DC. They are more convenient and you can usually get a deal.

What dates?

I saw a rental for OTA on March 26th and NH on March 28th.
