I have often considered Newport RI one of the best kept secrets in the timeshare world and now I have found another in RI, Block Island. We just returned from a stay at Neptune House (trades in II) there is also a resort there called Island Manor Resort (RCI amd II), which we drove by while in town. Island Manor has more of an "in town" location and appeared more active from the outside, but also more congested.
I only wanted to go one night to meet up with a friend of DD, but the cost of hotels were insane and I found a Getaway via II. The cost of the week, just over the cost of 1 night at a hotel. So, we went for 5 nights. I had only been to the island once last year as part of a large family day trip organized by another. We took the ferry in, ate lunch, browsed the main street stores and returned. I was told "we did it all" while there. I was nervous we would get there and find nothing to do. I was wrong, we had nothing extravagant to do, but all the simple things were lovely. Things I SHOULD do at home, but never do. Take a walk on the beach or along a nature preserve trail, sleep in, read a book, play cards, make a puzzle! I have been on Disney overload the last few trips and this SLOW pace was welcoming.
The island just felt like New England. Windy roads, rock walls, farmhouses and the ocean. The beaches we found were lovely and depending on the side of the island very different. Clean with fine sand, rocky with seals, grit sand and shells but great at low tide to explore tidal pools or dig for quoghogs (hard shelled clams).
I would suggest a car, but all can be explored via bike or scooter. If you bring a car, bring the old one! It will get filthy as many of the "off the beat and path" roads were dirt, narrow and overgrown with vegitation that scratch the car. Bringing a car will also also you to easily bring what you want, maybe a beach chair and definately your own food. Food....seriously, bring it all. The cost of food at the only grocery on the island is insanely expensive! Think $8 for a box of cerael, $5 for a jar of ragu, $3 for a cup of yogurt, $23 for one whole chicken, $20 a pound for rib-eye, $5 a pound for green peppers and $7 for a dozen eggs.
If you are looking for a place that allows you to fall back in love with the simple things in life, this is a great option.
