Does anyone know, if when you purchase a Starwood resale, if they upgrade your Starwood Preferred Guest Level from PREFERRED to GOLD on the hotel side?
No, they do not. Only developer purchases is my understanding.
SUPPOSEDLY, SPG Gold as well as the conversion-to-Starpoints feature are benefits of SVN membership, which conveys only with mandatory resorts. It would seem that if these are benefits of SVN, and resale buyers of mandatory resorts are members of SVN and pay the same SVN membership fees, then these benefits should also convey. However, Starwood has made up their own rules and what sjsharkie has stated above is correct. That said, if someone cared enough about these benefits to pursue action against Starwood, I think there's a reasonable chance they would be forced to provide these benefits to resale buyers as well.
there's probably a clause in the club (SVN) agreement saying some of the features only apply to the first owner (developer purchase), and not subsequent owners (resale)
similar situation -- at least here, this is pretty common on condos where the ability to rent is unrestricted for the first owner, and restricted/gone for any later owners.
Are you certain that your Gold status is because of your membership in SVN or is it possible you have the Starwood AMEX or reached some other qualification milestone? The reason I ask is, your experience would be contrary to just about everyone else's.My husband and I recently purchased a Westin Kierland Villas ownership via resale. Our SPG membership did get bumped up to Gold.
I do believe that my Gold status is because of the yearly SVN membership fee that I pay w/my maintenance fees.
The Gold status upgrade occurred shortly after our resale purchase, at WKV, finalized and transferred to my husband and me.
I did not have a Starwood AMEX at that time, so it is unrelated.
I think we received a letter from SVN, upon transfer, that welcomed us to SVN and talked about the benefits such as the gold status upgrade. If I find the letter I'll confirm.
To be honest, the subject matter is so wishy washy.
Here's a link to the same discussion from 2010:

Note: the SPG status is in your SPG account - not SVN account.
I know that, but how can you link spg and svn account? I mean, How does spg know I am a SVN owner? I can't find a place to enter my SVN# in spg account either. Can anyone throw some light on me?

I tried the same thing by sending them an email. Here's what I got.
Please be aware, weeks purchased through resale at a mandatory resort, or within a mandatory phase of the resort, are eligible for internal exchange using the StarOptions value of the ownership week; however, the week is not eligible for conversion to StarPoints, nor is your SPG account eligible for upgrade to Gold level.
