NO! And see, that's the thing. The most strident voices in response to questions about direct purchases are absolute and unconditional, i.e. "RESCIND NOW, DON'T BE AN IDIOT, ONLY SUCKERS BUY DIRECT, THE USAGE VALUE YOU WANT ISN'T COST-EFFECTIVE, DON'T BUY ANYTHING JUST RENT, IF THEIR LIPS ARE MOVING THEY'RE LYING, BLAHBLAHBLAH!!!" Sometimes it's even plastered in GIANT RED FONT and decorated with every emphasizer available, I guess for those who are exceedingly idiotic?

I have never seen a TUGger who sees certain value in purchasing direct and sharing their knowledge, say anything near that absolute or insulting to those who buy or sell on the external market.

That's the difference, and that's the attitude I would prefer to not see on TUG. EVER.

Well said. Unfortunately, the attitude is so ingrained that those doing the attacking honestly don't see what they are doing. It is also evident in the attacks made against sales presentations and the refusal to acknowledge that some people often find them interesting and valuable. I object not to the view of people who do not like to attend presentations but rather to the blanket condemnation of all presentations in a most graphic and insulting way.

if only as much insult and indignation were felt by the timeshare community as a whole towards the shady and outright ridiculous tactics still used today in many sales presentations....

I think the words your looking for are, constructive criticism. It's good for all of us. The bad debt for all of us who own Wyndham CWA, is costing $120 for every million points.(based on 2016 budget for CWA). WE, cannot afford to leave a possible timeshare owners, direct or resale with such a bitter taste that not only do they never buy, even if it would be a good fit for them.

There was a reason behind why they wanted to buy, we should nurture that, and at the same time point out what uninformed idiots they are

I think we're all in agreement that there are far too many instances of timeshares being sold through tactics that should be outlawed, and that those who engage in those practices should be held criminally liable. Those of us who rail against the negative attitude on TUG are as happy as the rest of TUGgers to celebrate all the articles you post that show these practices/folks being punished.

Where we don't all agree is in thinking/saying that the negativity generated by those practices/people is to be found in every corner of the industry. There are some good products being offered by some good guys, despite their employers being thought of by most TUGgers as the enemy. ;)

I do not blame the TS salespeople - as I said in my previous post - I blame the people who actually buy a TS without any unbiased research. Why would that ever be a good idea? Because this 'deal' is good only today? right...

I learned my lesson and rescinded a TS that would have cost me ~$50K (thanks to TUG) - I researched, I listened, I learned, and I rescinded... whew...

Now... when someone comes to me telling me that they bought a TS - I strongly recommend to rescind if they still can, and inform them of the reasons. If not, then make best of it...

I'll one-up that:

I don't blame the salesmen; there are good ones and bad ones...just doing what they do best to earn a buck. Like any other profession--morals are absent in a lot of professions IMHO

I don't blame the people who buy. It sounds good, it seems to make sense--who wouldn't want a great timeshare, time with family all for such a low price that you already pay?.....

I do blame the people (salesforce) that blatantly lie in order to take advantage of the weaker sheep

I do blame the people that purchase and then decide they are going to dump their mistake in somebody else's lap--because they have no personal responsibility.

And....I strongly caution people not to purchase things on credit that they can't afford and will be worthless in no-time. This includes timeshares, cars, boats, etc...

I really don't think this thread is going anywhere so....

Sue, I completely agree with you that the tone on this site is way off. My wife for years would not even visit this site because of the inflaming tone. When I would burry my nose in this site she would say are you on 'that site' again? She has come around over the years and tolerates / believes a little more now.

I myself skipped over this very thread first few times I saw it due to the 'sandsucking' title line. Who needs to waste their time reading flaming attitude from others? After seeing the thread build responses I finally dove in and find its quite a hoot.

I don't consider myself biased and have purchased both developer and resale points over the years. There may be only a small percent of the cases where buying direct is truly a 'rational financial decision' but purchases are rarely rational. I view the process of learning timeshare as a 'journey'. My journey toward resale might have been shorter if the messages in here weren't so flaming and off-putting.

Sometimes people do buy a 'double latte' even if its not entirely rational. And from the developer's perspective the prospect of selling the same unit 52 times to get it filled has to be daunting. I do suspect most of that money goes to the sales channel so they can commit with confidence they can make it happen.
