Four. Following up on @Rolltydr 's comment, this word is a past tense that is not normally used in America, but in England and some other parts of the word. In America, the past tense ends in the typical "ed." Personally I don't think the Times should have used it as this is an American game. (Not a terribly serious complaint, but a complaint nonetheless.)

But I didn't think of past tense at all. This word does have a different meaning.

It would be interesting to know which meaning of the word (past tense of spell or type of wheat) the writer intended. If past tense of spell, I’d say it was a bit if a trick word. If type of wheat, just a tough word, but fair. It wouldn’t make any difference in my score, so not a big deal. Also, in response to @“Roger”, although the game is now owned and operated by the NYT, it was invented by an Englishman who later sold it to the Times.
