You should tell the owners. Something is wrong with their system.
Not neccessarily "wrong". We installed Culligan and it was the biggest mistake we made wrt water softener. Slimy water etc, just the way MaryAnn deacribed. We switched out to a different system after 2 years.

Mary Ann, there should be a bypass valve on the incoming pipe to the water softener. Just shut it and your water won't go through the softener. It will just go into the regular pipes in the house.

We do not want to mess with the owners system. For whatever reason, he must want the softener- maybe for the pipes?

We can live with it this way, though it is a pain in the you know what.
