When you need information that you've not searched down before - the first rule is go to Tuggers to see what they know that I don't. So, here I am.

It has been many many moons since I've set foot anywhere near Waikiki (1976 to be exact!) Can anyone give me some good recommendations for a timeshare near the beach. I've been on a few timeshare sites and just can't get the lay of the land as to what is good and what not so good for a place to stay. Not sure right now whether it would be for a week or 3-4 nights.

Any hotel recommendations that you also know that are good places to stay.

I apprieciate your helpl. Thank you very much.

What sort of a place are you wanting for your stay? Are you looking for upscale accommodations, with lots to do at the place, beachfront access (or its own beach), or something more modest, with less happening on site?

Waikiki is more about location, and less about facilities, in my opinion. The island is so nice, and there are so many great beaches, Waikiki isn't a place I'd want to hang around all day. Add in that every beach is open to the public in Hawaii - there are no private beaches. So for me, the places I'd stay are more about convenience, a good bed, hot shower, and affordability. The rest of the time I'm usually out and about.

If you want fancier, with more to see and do, the Hilton Hawaiian Village is a pretty good place to start looking. The Imperial Waikiki is a reasonably nice mid-level place close to the beach. And places like the Kuhio Banyan Club are definitely on the lower end of things, but still only a few blocks from the beach. (It's little more than a pull-down Murphy bed and a bathroom, but it's clean and a great base camp.)

The TUG resort reviews are a great place to start. I'd suggest wading through those, and try to determine the sort of vacation you're trying to plan.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Take a look at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Here are the TUG ratings for Oahu timeshares - http://tug2.com/RnR/ResortsGrid.aspx?ResortArea=3&ResortGroup=21

Here's a link to the Oyster Review for the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
They have lots of great photos - http://www.oyster.com/hawaii/hotels/hilton-hawaiian-village/ (select the Photos tab).
At the Hilton Hawiian Village there are three timeshare towers Kalia, Lagoon and the Grand Waikikian (NOTE: The Kalia tower has a mixed use of hotel rooms and timeshare units)

Here's are some Waikiki aerial shots

Shell Vacations Club at Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai (next to the Hilton Lagoon tower) - http://wizardpub.com/oahu/orilikai.html
Wyndham Waikiki BeachWalk (it's the two smaller towers across from the circled Embassy Suites tower that is furthest from the ocean; The Imperial Waikiki is the building in front of the Wyndham) - http://wizardpub.com/oahu/orembassysuites.html

Outside of Waikiki...

I'd recommend Marriott's Ko-Olina if you can get a trade there. Also, if your time and $ permit, an overnight to the north shore with one night at the Turtle Bay Resort is one of our favorite things to do.

Stay at Waikiki Somewhere

The Marriott's is the best resort but Waikiki has lots to do for most people. If you want your privacy remote Marrriottts fills the bill. We ar prrejudiced owners of four Waikiki Banyan weeks and stay two or three weeks a year. Small -Party room for 6, dinner for four and sleeps two. Clean, well located but not fancy. We have owned there about 15 years and it is all we want and need.Loction is more important to us than the resort.
Hilton Hawaiian Village is probably the best though. Better resort with much to do and next door to the best beach area at the Hale Koa which is open to the public. If you are ex military you could stay at the Hale Koa for inexpensive Hawaii rates.

We've stayed at both Hilton Hawaiian Village and Wyndham Waikiki BeachWalk. Much better views from HHV and it's on the beach but getting a lounge chair by the pool was almost impossible - people were reserving them with towels at 9am, very frustrating. They really need a larger pool.

Wyndham was an older hotel that was renovated into ts a few years back when the entire BeachWalk shopping and restaurant area was built. The rooms were nice and the location for non-beach activities was great. The pool is large but not landscaped and has no view :(

HHV is farther walk from our favorite Waikiki restaurants - Shore Bird for breakfast and Duke's for $$$ drinks and a light meal - as well as our main strolling area along Halakaua Ave near the Duke statue. Look at the aerial views on both Google Maps and Bing maps to see the resorts and search for restaurants, etc nearby.

I'll be looking for another trade in Waikiki in the next year and don't know which I'd prefer getting - probably HHV - it has a more Hawaiian feel and is more upscale.
