Cool and rainy here in San Diego County. Nice and green. Last week, on February 26, it was actually warmer in my normally deep-frozen hometown (Minneapolis) than it was here. It was 65 degrees there that day, the warmest ever recorded there in the month of February. Never thought I'd ever see Minnesota (!!) get warmer than Southern California on a winter day!
Today it should be 67 here in the Twin Cities. 😎 Perfect for another March bike ride.

Fourth morning in a row with snow falling (not sticking) about Sunrise. Very unusual for Salem Oregon at this time of year.

You are so correct, this is not Friday March 8, 2024. This has been a drawn out week, so much have happen and not all good.
I went to my first seminar on The Cochlear Nucleus Implant System, very interesting.

Happy Aloha Friday!!! It's the first Aloha Friday of March. The Axis Deer here are now in Velvet so we know Spring is upon us.

This week's picture takes us back to Oahu and Waikiki. The Ala Wai Canal was built in the 1920's to drain the swamps and the rice fields. This is a view alongside the Canal looking towards Iconic Diamond Head. We took this photo while we were on a walk when we lived on Ala Wai Blvd.

Enjoy and have an Awesome Aloha Friday and a Great weekend!!🤙🏻🌺🌴😎

Happy Aloha Friday!

Years ago we watching as a wedding couple posed for pictures on the lanai of the Moana Surfrider in Waikiki.
2012-03-04%2015-17-16-X3.jpg

It's a good thing they didn't lean too hard on the railing. Recently the Surfrider was in the news when the railing fell of when nobody was on the lanai. Fortunately, nobody below was seriously injured by the falling debris.

took this the other day. leaving today. If you ignore the palm trees and the 1-way street aspect, this view in the eve reminds me of the view from my office in the Helmsley Bldg in Manhattan looking up Park Ave. (stoplights, brake lights, Tiffany, Vuitton, the Waldorf, etc) Anyone who knows what is somewhat unique about the Helmsley will get that.

Happy Aloha Friday! Today we are planting bare root strawberry starts in a new vertical planter - a Greenstalk Leaf. I will post some pictures when it's done.

Here is our new Greenstalk, Leaf model, all put together - my Strawberry starts didn't come in today, so hopefully they will be here tomorrow. Rod hooked up an automatic watering system and everything. It also has a runoff hose that goes into the flower bed to the right. It will hold 42 plants. Yes, it looks like it's leaning to one side, hmm, maybe the watering system is tilting it a bit. *It's actually not the planter that's tilted - the patio is a little higher on the corner under the downspout, so it's raising the base a little higher on that side.

This product is made by a family business in the US. I bought mine at the end of the growing season in the fall for 45% off. It comes in a box and you assemble it, but it was easy. They have frequent sales - if you'd like to be notified of a sale, sign up for their newsletter: https://greenstalkgarden.com/

Jeff - A couple of these would be perfect for your patio, and people grow all kinds of things in them.

Someone I know grows about 30 different kinds of herbs in one of those. I can't remember how big & heavy strawberry plants get (ex the berries). With a good crop of berries, you'll get a heckuva lot more weight than with herbs. Is it easy to disconnect the H2O & rotate it around to equalize sun exposure & the weight (assuming sunny-side plants produce bigger berries)?

Yes, one of the Greenstalk options is a sturdy 6-wheeled platform that can easily be moved or turned. The hose that we used to attach the Greenstalk to the faucet is one of those shrinking hoses that are soft and pliable, and the drain tube is 5 ft. long, so it won't have to be disconnected to turn it. We expect to turn it often for equal sun exposure to both sides.

People even grow squash and pumpkins in Greenstalks, so strawberries will be fine.

Happy Aloha Friday to all.

Denise, thanks for posting. That is an interesting device. I currently do hydroponics using clay pellets to hold the plants and a home-built ebb/flow system. It is pretty much automated including the pump timer, thermostatic vents and water reservoir re-fill. But I need to periodically add nutrients and keep the pH correct.

We have a move coming up so I might consider buying one of these. Thanks again for posting.

I started doing back yard gardening in 2020, and I have 4 raised beds now. But I'm running out of sunny locations to add additional beds in our suburban back yard, so this seems like a good option.

Happy Aloha Friday!! Another week down and March is half over already. St. Patrick's Day will soon be here so break out the green Beer and the Corned Beef and Cabbage.

This week's picture takes us back to Oahu and Waikiki. There are many shortcuts to the beaches from Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki. A couple of them look like this with Surfboard storage along the way.

Enjoy and have an Awesome Aloha Friday and a Great weekend!!!🤙🏻🌺🌴😎

Happy Aloha Friday!

Ever want a very private vacation? You can't get much more private than the Gillin Beach House. Located near the CJM Country Stables in south Kauai, the house is available for rental at about $1000/night. You'll definitely need a 4 wheel drive to get there, and some good shock absorbers. The shoreline is public, so you might get some occasional hikers.
